Maxwell, the quondam rex of the world, returns to bloodshed to survive Charlie's new reign. Maxwell is more than suited for new players than more experienced players in regular Don't Starve.
Perks and Starting Items (Single Player) [ ]
Afterward beingness unlocked from Adventure Way, Maxwell comes with the most starting items of whatsoever grapheme. Starting with the Codex Umbra, 4 Nightmare Fuel, 1 Purple Gem, Night Armor and a Dark Sword. Coupled with his natural Sanity regeneration of +20 per minute , the sanity drain of the Sword and Armor are negligible and wearing sanity-regaining clothes is a waste product of resource unless it is also an armor (like the Scalemail). Maxwell will never lose sanity fifty-fifty at 100 Wetness with wet clothes.
The Nighttime Armor is incredibly useful early in the game for combat with hostile mobs, equally it blocks 95% of impairment taken by everything. The Dark Sword makes hunting easier and boss fights a breeze. His starting Nightmare Fuel and Purple Gem means he tin craft a Shadow Manipulator faster than most characters, allowing access to dangerous and powerful recipes early on.
The Codex Umbra is definitely his most useful item as he tin can make Shadow Puppets to help with chores and fighting. Summoning a Puppet will toll 55 max sanity, 2 Nightmare Fuel and 15 wellness. Puppets last for 2.5 days merely tin be dispelled at any fourth dimension past force-attacking them. Puppets volition also follow Maxwell into the ocean with their own shadow Row Boats but do not accept a sail in the Shipwrecked DLC.
Cons (Unmarried Player) [ ]
Maxwell has incredibly low health compared to other characters which makes combat dangerous if caught without his armor. This is remedied with his Night Armor or other armor items. Getting a Meat Effigy will only serve to make Maxwell frailer. This makes Beard Hair useless to Maxwell.
While his sanity regeneration may seem like a benefit, his regeneration can go far hard to farm Nightmare Fuel and reap the benefits of being insane.
Bosses are incredibly dangerous to Maxwell. His low health makes the fight difficult. While during prolonged fights, he tin keep his sanity loftier to avoid Shadow Creatures
Pros and Starting Items (Don't Starve Together) [ ]
Maxwell has been inverse significantly in Don't Starve Together. His wellness remains the same, and he even so possesses the Codex Umbra and Nightmare Fuel when inbound the Constant, only he has been counterbalanced for multiplayer. Maxwell no longer starts with the Dark Sword, Night Armor, and the Purple Gem.
His sanity regeneration has been cut downward to +half-dozen.67 per minute which makes it harder to regain lost sanity. Even so, this also meanst that Maxwell will exist able to stay insane for longer, allowing him to farm Nightmare Fuel more than effectively. This too prevents him from losing any sanity after one actor has died and get a ghost. His maximum sanity loss by summoning puppets also makes going insane much easier.
Maxwell's general role in DST is early on-to-midgame resources gathering. He tin clear unabridged forests and remove the stumps even faster than Woodie. Combined with his starting Nightmare Fuel, he can gain admission to college-tier magic items sooner. However, if we accept the Werebeaver into account, Woodie can however assemble resources at a faster rate than Maxwell. Just if you lot practice not have a plentiful supply of food to sustain Woodie later he reverts to human, Maxwell is the more often than not more reliable resource gatherer.
Maxwell is also able to read Wickerbottom's books, reaping the benefits of using them while negating the sanity price to some extent.
The Codex Umbra has also had a massive overhaul. Puppets no longer require health to be sacrificed in social club to summon them. Creating Puppets now requires a tool depending on the deportment you want them to take.
The table beneath shows the requirements for each specific variation of Puppets.
Shadow Helper | Description | Prerequisites | Max Sanity Loss |
---|---|---|---|
Shadow Logger | Chops copse closest to the player | 2 Nightmare Fuel ane Axe | -twenty% |
Shadow Miner | Mines rocks closest to the role player | 2 Nightmare Fuel 1 Pickaxe | -xx% |
Shadow Digger | Digs up stumps/graves closest to the thespian | ii Nightmare Fuel 1 Shovel | -twenty% |
Shadow Duelist | Defends the player from attackers equally well equally assault role player's target. Naturally regenerates health. | 2 Nightmare Fuel i Spear | -35% |
Summoning Limitations [ ]
- 3 Harvesters - Remaining Sanity: 80
- ane Duelist and two Harvesters - Remaining Sanity: 50
- 4 Harvesters - Remaining Sanity: 40
- ii Duelists and one Harvester - Remaining Sanity: 20
Notation: Harvesters are resources-gathering Puppets.
Cons (Don't Starve Together) [ ]
Maxwell's cons remain largely the same. He is still frail merely he can go insane faster, which every bit as stated earlier is both a pro and a con. Every bit he no longer starts with armor, getting into fights is dangerous. Creating Telltale Hearts is often not worth the health penalty and it is better to ask somebody else to make one. Maxwell's usefulness frequently dims the later the game goes on, as his combat potential is weak, and his resource gathering is non every bit efficient every bit Woodie's in the tardily game.
Creating Shadow Duelists should generally be avoided. In combat, they are non very useful, although they do equivalent harm to a Nighttime Sword strike per swing. However, Duelists' actual harm output is relatively low since merely two can be active at any time and they spend the majority of an encounter attempting to kite attacks. In addition, they will die afterward just 75 damage is dealt to them, only like Maxwell. Duelists tin can be healed, but armor cannot be applied to them. They automatically set on Monster-blazon mobs, and non-Monster mobs hostile to Maxwell. This as well means that Duelists will attack and kill Glommer without provocation.
(Notation: Here, mobs that drib Monster Meat are considered to be in the Monster mob category, with the exception of Deerclops.)
Possible Subconscious Perk? Or bug? [ ]
Information technology is currently unknown whether an occurrence for many Maxwell players is an easter egg, or simply a bug. The occurrence in question deals with Maxwell and Charlie. While surrounded by darkness, Charlie will attack Maxwell 3 seconds later than whatever other grapheme. While I have tested this personally, it could simply be lag, only many of my Steam friends have likewise reported this to me.
